The Real Thing.

When I was in Lyceum, my accounts teacher in my A1, before revising on the concepts of double entry told us in a jovial manner " back in the 90's, coke was considered to be the real thing"
Just so that you know, you can view it here
But then later on, my teacher added " In accounting, debit is the real thing!" All the students, including myself, were perplexed as to how could debit be the real thing. It was his style to make learning easy and fun for students so then he said " R=Receiver , E= Expenses, A=Assets, L= Losses ... you debit all these things"
( If you have studied Accounting in your life, you can add this to your Accounting Literacy)
Debit suddenly became the real thing!
Last year, I was watching Matrix after my cousin insisted that it is an excellent movie and that I have missed so much if I hadn't watched Matrix. So, in the middle of that movie, a very famous dialogue came and real according to the movie meant coming out of the MATRIX. Morpheus says this to NEO and here is the clip:
This semester, i took a course in Philosophy, Logic & Ethics. In one of the lectures, my teacher asked the students "where is IBA?" Everyone answered "In Karachi". Then she asked "Where is Karachi?" and everyone answered " In Sindh" Then she asked, "Where is Sindh?" Everyone answered "In Pakistan". Then she questioned, "where is Pakistan?" and everyone answered " In the world". Then she questioned, "where is the world?"
Half of the class had already stopped answering since it seemed a series of never ending questions so then she said
"if the world is in milky way, and the milky way is in the universe, then where exactly is the universe? We know that there are millions of universes out there, then, do all these universes lie in "nothingness" ? The world that we live in feels so real. But if all of this is in nothingness, then, is nothingness real?"(this is what I understood)
My version of real is different. Yesterday I went to Sunday Bazaar. There were shoes, bags, clothes, jewelery, books, magazines, photo frames, showpieces, electronic items, food... you name it! But yet, it felt so unreal. For four hours, I hadn't bought anything. My eyes were literally aching with so much around me that I had to look at the ground often to put myself at peace. Many a times I wanted to buy books but never ended up buying only because the feeling of satisfaction in those things were missing. Finally, I gave up and went to sit on a bench nearby, thinking why I had even decided to come there. Only then, a lady with two little kids came and sat beside me on the bench. She gave them a bottle of milk but then suddenly it fell on the ground. She tried picking it up but since she couldn't I offered her my help. And when I picked it from the ground and gave it back to her, suddenly, I realized I had found something REAL. That act gave me the satisfaction I had been searching on in the things for so long.Without purchasing anything "seemingly real" I was extremely happy. I knew it then and there that belief in One and Only God is the asal [real] & that anything that pleases Him has to be real since our Hereafter is the real life.
They say that only dead fish follow the current. We have a choice of being a dead fish, following the current to whichever shore it takes us to, or have a choice of fighting against the current towards the oceans of knowledge in front of us and searching for the answers ourselves.

hmm...very well written Nida; I ofcourse agree with you that perception is what creates a reality in a sense because it is our perception what defines our values & ethics, and in a sense we act on those because we believe those are what are real versus not - right vs. wrong - worthy vs. not-worthy. Glad you are getting into Philosophy, hope you get to read a little about Immanuel Kant. When it comes to moral philosophy he is one of the greatest, some would say the brainchild, and Albert Einstein of innovative thinking. In terms of truth being completely relative, I have been pondering over this for years, and recently have come to a more peaceful state of mind by looking at the opposing points for it. It makes sense when one can say `what is real` and make a point that defining real is relative but then immediately following that thought you are automatically destined to follow an endless rabbit hole where you ask `well what if we are not humans but other animals dreaming of being human`...`how do I know I exist`...`anything exists?`....`how do I know I`m awake?`....etc. etc....all kinds of ridiculous questions show up. You see, in my opinion, no..some kind of existence does exist and here`s why I think that: For if you are dreaming and life is still a dream somewhere time still exists where this dream is still continued...therefore time exists and some variable of life exists no matter what...and some instance is continuing...which means something is real, no matter what even if it is only time. Thats one answer but I wholeheartedly also accept that much of the reality we perceive is also real, however it is placed as a cosmetic journey to `entering into the real world`....I believe this life is real but a dream at the same time...because it is supposed to show you nightmares if you don`t accept the path that will help you enter the `real world`...it is a journey that is placed before your eyes...time that has been given for you internally - your soul a.k.a your subconscious - to wake up so you can really experience life. It is a dream and you are not really experiencing anything, you are only dreaming a fake life...you will only get to experience the true harshness or pleasures of life after passing this dream - a.k.a by entering the `real world`. You wake up when the dream ends. How you acted in the dream is how you wake up...for example, when one lets the dream control him or her they wake up sweating and in turmoil and often wake up `falling`into the ground because they have felt a nightmare but, in the opposite instance, when they have complete control of the dream, know that its only a dream, and live the dream knowing that real life is assumed when they wake up, this person comes out of his or her sleep with content and a smile.

Well thats one metaphorical explanation and the last theoretical objection to `relative truth` is this...if you say that everything is relative and there is no such thing as one truth but it is defined by everyone individually - as it states according to the rule of `Ethical Relativism` in philosophy - then there`s a problem when you say that `truth is relative` because you have just stated a truth that exists. Do you see the loophole....or no? Let me explain it again...If you cannot say any one truth is absolute and truth is relative then you can NEVER state ANY kind of truth that is universal...but just by saying `truth is relative` you have stated an absolute truth....so this self-defeats itself; creates a contradiction, however, when one states that `truth is absolute` or some kind of truth exists then there are no loopholes at all. No matter then by accepting the latter rule you accept that some kind of existence exists, and that some kind of First Cause exists for everything...(also the very First Cause of everything in the universe being more probable and pointing to the more likelihood of an Intelligent Design). In the end, my conclusion is that if you follow the rabbit hole of `relativity`...yes, you may be able to find some objectivity versus just having subjectivity, but you may also lose your mind because those who do not accept any kind of reality whatsoever become insane. There`s a scientific rule: two things cannot exist in the same place at the same time -- this means that if you``re standing in a place in space and time now, noone else can stand in the exact same spot because something else is already there. It also means two extreme qualities cannot exist at the same time together: a person cannot be dead and alive at the same time -- there is no such thing as an actual undead or zombie in real life - a man cannnot be human and a chicken at the same time...etc..etc. Similarly one who has faith is sane, and who does not have faith is insane. It has been shown that if a ball falls ten out of ten times and hits the ground that most people will say it will hit the ground the eleventh time even when it has happened, even many atheists who say we rather not have faith in anything will say this. It only proves you require a degree of faith in anything because if you don`t nothing is certain. You have no true way of knowing what exists and what doesn`t exist, which part of reality is so-called universally `real` or not but EVERYTHING requires a degree of faith. Ain`t this the so-called card of God, if anything at all is -- it`s faith. If you deny some kind of absolute truth or reality, or if you lose faith in everything you only lose your sanity, this can be viewed from both the psychological and philosophical side :-)

Very well said Emad. I have studied about Ethical Relativism and the dangers associated with it. We touched upon some of the people in the past who became absolute skeptics (such as Protogoras who said that "man is a measure" of all things)
By the way, I think you should start your own blog too where you can talk about philosophy in depth :D

i love it nida :)

@Nida: Well written.
@Emad: These debates seems never ending though they give satisfaction to believers upon their faith as backed with reason and logic, human suffering for example is real and inaction of believers towards it seems real too, when atheists and agnostics find the mere claims of a merciful God not backed by sufficient mercifulness on grounds, then my friend the justifications of absolute or relativity loses meaning atleast for sufferers, philosophical strivings are meaningless for them as donot remove sufferring of the have-nots.Many fail to believe in Islam which is exemplified in the pages of history today because it doesn't even exists today, its nearer to extinction when measured on its delivery to the humans as claimed.

Nice Article.
As they say, our perceptions that result from the inputs received through our five senses, are but perceptions. When you observe red color, it is not 'actually red' but only a certain frequency/wavelength of light energy hitting your retina. So my 'red' may be your 'green', and vice versa.
Moreover, we can observe the surroundings only on the basis of 5 of our senses: and we have no way to prove there may NOT be other senses than these 5. Just as a blind-by-birth can never understand what it means to 'see'.
Scientific beliefs are based on laws, and the very existence of laws points to the existence of a Law Maker.

Nice writing,
We feel, we think n react …
An architect told me a phenomenon abt the two sections of mind, Front and back … front mind works for the actual focused stuff… n back mind keeps the impressions of surroundings …. e.g., walking on the street, towards destination … Front mind keeps the track of actual focused way; however the back mind keeps the impression of surroundings.
We dream, However, Allah declared in Quran that He Almighty grabs the soul out of our bodies in the nights we sleep n put it back into before wake …. Sometimes we dream based on the impressions of back mind … our mood n actions reflect the status of back mind…
In The Arrivals, it also cleared the concept of ++ve and --ve energies … A wallpaper with a dark background create --ve impressions on back mind however, light colors create ++ve impressions, n we never realized.
Here, these imaginations n impressions are those non realities that imposed by the real world around, n that is subjected to the other realities happened afterword.
Thanx

July 9, 2010 at 11:43 PM
Well, it is written in a jovial manner. Thats what my teacher used to say to teach us. Receiver, Expenses, assets and losses are always debited. REAL for each of the letter above
